The Dominion is Canadian owned and operated since 1887 and is one of the largest property and casualty insurers in Canada. The Dominion’s commitment to operational excellence and high responsiveness to the needs of the brokers are critical factors that led the company to select OneShield Policy for their core system modernization and platform consolidation initiative.

The implementation of OneShield Policy delivers impressive gains in efficiency for The Dominion, including:

  • Automation to reduce manual data entry and the back and forth with the broker;
  • More flexibility around workflows, increasing the ability to be more efficient and productive;
  • The Dominion had to build controls in the old systems and there were three different policy management systems — all will be streamlined and rolled into OneShield Policy.

The Dominion’s enterprise policy replacement project is an immense effort with multiple integration points resulting in the retirement of its legacy systems. This transformation will facilitate the ease of doing business for the independent broker distribution network by enabling straight-through processing.

“A few things stood out right away for us when we evaluated OneShield. First, it was a solution that would meet the needs of our brokers as well as our internal staff. We wouldn’t need to invest in a core system as well as an Agency or Broker System,” said Derek Oke, senior information technology architect. “A must for any product selection for The Dominion is to ensure the product is in production already. Not only did OneShield have a track record of implementation successes, but implementation across most of our commercial and personal product lines. We did not want to have to choose a separate system for commercial and personal or for surety, for example.”

Competitive Advantage

In 2005, CapSpecialty realized that its current infrastructure was leaving them at a competitive disadvantage in the market. The company developed three primary goals:

  • Convert 20 years of bond data, functionality and workflow processing from its two legacy fidelity and surety administration systems into one modern processing system.
  • Automate processes to cost-effectively grow their business.
  • Improve customer service by enabling agents to support their customer demands in real-time.

CapSpecialty selected OneShield Policy to help it meet these objectives. Chief Information Officer Bob Asensio explains, “CapSpecialty needed to move its legacy surety business to a new platform and provide straight-through processing to our agents – no small task. The OneShield Policy framework provided the flexibility to develop the feature set we needed, and facilitated the conversion of 20 years’ of bond data from two systems.”

Asensio added, “The company had business, technology, and regulatory drivers behind our implementation of OneShield Policy. As a result of M&A activities, we had two legacy bond administration systems that needed consolidation. We had also become a subsidiary of a publicly-traded company, so tight controls for compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley were imperative. Most importantly, we needed a system that would allow us to rapidly bring enhancements and new products to the market. And now several years later we still feel that OneShield gives us the ability to respond to changes in the business.”

Allied World Assurance Company (acquired Darwin Professional Underwriters in 2008), is a global provider of innovative property and casualty insurance, including a variety of management liability and other professional liability lines.

As a start-up in 2003, Darwin needed a platform upon which they could build a solid foundation for expansion — no matter which path the business decided to take. A flexible, configurable platform capable of rapidly introducing unique products was critical, given their aggressive growth schedule.

Ease of Doing Business through Self-Service

The primary objective of the company was to deliver high automation to a multi-tiered distribution channel via a technology platform that assured they could be nimble and responsive to their customers. Allied World implemented OneShield Policy to enable a complete underwriting infrastructure that reduced an industry-standard 30-day process down to 10 minutes.

The system has been evolving since its first launch in 2004, when Bob Asensio, executive vice president, information technology for Bermuda-based Allied World, first conceived and configured OneShield Policy to provide self-service underwriting, rating and policy administration capabilities to support producers selling professional liability insurance to the small to medium-size business market.

“In Darwin’s formative years, OneShield Policy helped us establish our brand. After Allied World’s acquisition, we rolled a complete set of complex products onto OneShield Policy”.

Advantage Insurance Inc. is a leading international provider of customized insurance services to high-net-worth individuals and business owners. Based in the Cayman Islands with offices in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, Advantage has two main product lines – a life insurance division issuing Private Placement insurance policies and annuities, and a business insurance division providing captive insurance management services.

Transforming a Manual, Paper-Based System

Since its launch in 1993, Advantage had grown rapidly while operating largely with a paper-based system that was heavily reliant on manually-maintained policy information. These processes were subject to potential human error and time constraints, and relied on a group of key managers to input and handle policy changes and information manually. In many cases, critical business data was entered and updated by hand in spreadsheets.

The leadership team identified that manual methods could potentially inhibit Advantage’s growth and scalability, as well as its ability to adapt quickly to a changing marketplace, introduce new and competitive products, and comply with the myriad of regulations in its growing global markets.

Advantage turned to OneShield to implement its enterprise-class OneShield Life Solution – creating new efficiencies in task and document processing, improving financial management, enhancing customer communication, and ensuring adherence to anti-money laundering and KYC (know your customer) regulations. Using OneShield’s core platform, Advantage would be in a distinct position to transform its business for rapid growth and expansion of its private placement life insurance offerings.

The project scope for the implementation covered two Advantage product lines – Variable Universal Life Policies and Variable Annuities. Specifically, OneShield Enterprise would be used to support the day-to-day operations and jurisdiction requirements for Advantage Life & Annuity Company SPC (ALAC), Advantage Life Puerto Rico AI and Advantage Life USA SC.
